EPISODE 215

Success Secret #2: Say “no” more than you say “yes”

Biggest Takeaways You Don't Want to Miss:
  • The mistake most leaders make is that they overestimate what they can accomplish in one year and seriously underestimate what they could accomplish in 3 years.
  • Builders play the long game. Rather than trying to solve every problem they face by the end of the school year, they focus on solving their most important problems once and for all and ignore everything else.
  • Most distractions come disguised as opportunities. Knowing the difference matters.
  • Builders get more done by doing less because they are rigorously focused on the things that matter most and they ignore everything else.
  • Even a “right” opportunity might not be the right opportunity right now.
If you’re like most administrators I know, at this point in the summer, you have a plan that is a mile long. Summer tends to do that to us.

We get really excited that THIS year is going to be the best year so we start planning on doing ALL the things. But, trying to solve every problem, correct every mistake from last year, or take advantage of every new program and opportunity you have is a big mistake that will lead to burn out, frustration, and exhaustion.

Builders have a specific way of vetting every idea or opportunity and then rigorously saying NO to the ones that will not move the needle, so that they can say YES to the ones that will. That’s how Builders accomplish more by doing less.

On today’s episode, I’m breaking down that process step-by-step so that you can significantly cut down on the busy work this fall and focus on what matters most #LikeABuilder.

Check out these highlights:
  • Why Builders say no way more often than they say yes.
  • How to determine if an opportunity is right for your school -- and how to know when it’s a waste of time.
  • The 80/20 rule and why it matters to you this year.
  • How to achieve more by doing less.
